Fair Trade Fortnight 2009

Shona Hunter; the fairest chocolate cake maker of them all!

If you could improve the quality of life for people in poverty stricken countries, protect your health and reduce your environmental impact just by changing the brand of coffee that you drink of chocolate that you eat would you do it? If you answered yes, then you my friend will be a big fan of fair trade products. Fair Trade also extends far beyond chocolate and coffee to incorporate clothing, sporting goods, toys and far far more. So celebrate this Fair Trade Fortnight by making the resolution to choose fair trade whenever you can. There is an absolute stack of events you can take part in, so see below for more details.

What is fair trade?
Fair trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, which seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers - especially in the South. Fair trade organizations (backed by consumers) are engaged actively in supporting producers, awareness raising and in campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade.

The fairest chocolate cake of them all....

A highlight of this years WA Fair Trade Fortnight Program is the 4th annual Fair Trade Chocolate Cake Auction in conjunction with the opening of the Fair Trade Art Exhibition (Sun May 3, Opening - 6.30pm).

This 100% organic/biodynamic and fair trade chocolate cake (lovingly made of course) to be auctioned off to the highest bidder to raise funds.

This year the cake will be a three tiered dark and white choc delight, representing the three tiers of fair trade production: producer (base), the licensee (middle) and the consumer (top).

Come and join in the excitement of an auction and perhaps be the fortunate bidder to take home a fair trade delicacy to share with friends and family.
