Natural Instinct leader in misleading claims: Get your refund NOW
The company has been found to guilty of deliberately failing to list all ingredients on the on the ingredients lists such as Sodium Laureth Sulphate, listing some chemicals by incorrect names, and claiming that some products are "made from 100% pure oils and certified organic herbs" when in fact, only a very minor proportion of the product uses these. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has told it to publish corrective notices in newspapers & magazine. You can read more specifics on the link below.
I think most people who know a little about labelling would have realised that the products were far from 100% pure oils and certified organic herbs, but this latest deception is really so very manipulative.

Natural Instinct and Organic Instinct have never been part of the CleanLife Directory of recommended products (aka CleanLife's favourite companies), and we are very proud of that. The many companies we have turned away over the past years often don't understand how pedantic we are in choosing the products we recommend, this horrific event brings it into perfect clarity.
Despite the company being ineligible for our directory, I had thought that their products were better than the average off your shelf supermarket variety, and would have answered as much if anybody asked, and unfortunately that may not be so. I feel truly deceived.
There are so many things that disgust me about this incident, but one of the things that makes me feel sick to the bottom of my stomach is that many of the affected products are the baby ranges. I have included the products that are affected below, so please ensure you contact NI on the number they have provided on their website and, get your refund if you have purchased any affected products.
I am also incredibly upset at the effect this may have on people who were only recently starting to convert to natural products. Many families start with Natural Instinct because it is easy to access and cheap. Will those companies be put off natural and organic products altogether? I hope not.
What you can do to protect your family:
1) Learn to read labels, our labelling legislation in Australia is incredibly weak, read more about it here;
http://www.cleanlife.com.au/cleantips/labelling_myths.html
or
http://www.cleanlife.com.au/cleantips02.htm
2) Learn which chemicals need to be avoided and clean out your bathroom cupboard now
http://www.cleanlife.com.au/cleantips03.htm
3) Choose products from reputable companies, like those on the CleanLife directory
http://www.cleanlife.com.au/complist.htm
4) Ensure that you seek the full refund for any products you have purchased that many have been affected, see details below.
Here is an extract from the correction notice that comes as a pop up on the Natural Instinct website (if your pop up blocker doesn't get to it first as mine did).

I've been puzzled for some time about how this company was allowed to get away with this. I'm soooo pleased they have finally been held accountable! A win for the truly certifed organic products.
Like you say though, I hope people who are starting out on their clean journey don't get turned off!
Having come from the UK, I was unaware fo how poor the labelling laws are in Australia. I have using these products for over 18 months as they were inexpensive and easily accessable. I have put my reactive eczma down to stressful jobs etc. Now I know where the issue has come from I will be returing to genuine products again
Hooray! I have always suspected there was something fishy about this brand - particularly how they could sell it so cheaply. When they first came out, I remember being exasperated that they were heavily suggesting they were organic, which of course they were not. That message changed, but I was suspicious from then on.
It is so disheartening for legitimate stores like us, Biome Eco Stores (www.biome.com.au) when we see this in the market. We have had so many conversations with customers trying to tactfully educated them about the difference between NI and truly natural skin care with high quality, beautiful ingredients. We respect so much that people have tried to do the right thing.
This news helps restore my faith to follow to our passion -- and to keep questioning!
Thanks Gina and Tony for this information about Natural Instinct's misleading labelling. Will pass it on to as many as I can
In all good faith we have been using shampoo and conditioner from this range for 16 months after my husband was diagnosed with cancer. We changed our lifestyle to all natural products only now to find out we have be misled. Unfortanutely my husbands cancer has returned, chemicals have a lot to answer for.

I started using Natural Instinct Wash Powder when my child was about 12 months old, for over a year I couldn't work out where the eczema had come from and thought it was a food allergy. I washed his clothes in just warm water for 2 weeks and his eczema started to disappear. Although the wash powder is not listed in the products that weren't labelled properly I know it was that as he hasn't had it since. After numerous expensive trips to the doctor and subjected my child to steroid cream to try and clear it up, maybe they should have to compensate for that?
Hi Gina,
I just wanted to thank you so much for bringing this to our attention.
This sort of thing really upsets me because I, like most people, believe that the ingredients listed on a product are true and correct, this just makes it so hard for people to know what to buy and who to believe.
Like you, I'm trying to educate people about the dangers of using chemicals in their products, and this sort of business really makes it hard. I don’t know how they can live with their conscience or sleep at night. They should have a BIG, no make that HUGE hefty fine thrown at them and be put out of business. We need truth in labelling!
Thank you again, I think you and your site are doing a wonderful job. Keep up the great work!

Hi everyone, thank you all for posting your comments. I thought I had developed an allergy to a truely natrual product. My son and I have sensitive skin. I changed to Natural Instinct shampoo and conditioner hoping this would be the product we've been looking for. All was fine for a while then the occasional rash started to appear on my neck. I put the rash on my sons back down to teenage hormones. However the last bottle of conditioner that I purchased caused such a reaction in both of us that we knew there was something awfully wrong with the product. We both broke out in rashes on the face, eyelids ears & neck. My son has it on his hands and wrists. We noted that the consistency of the conditioner was unusually thin, almost milk like. Not aware of the issues associated with their products I sent them an email last night asking if they have changed the formula. They admitted that they had been experienced problems with stabilising a few of batches of product. Does that mean we have been using straight chemicals on our skin? And they have simply offered to give me a refund. This is not acceptable.
The sad part about all of this is that I have spoken to Health Food Stores and they comment that the sales haven't dropped at all.
As someone who has worked in the beauty industry for over 15 years I find this extremely frustrating.
One of the biggest parts of my job was ensuring compliance and it seems that companies that don't simply get a slap on the wrist.
I recommended the shampoo to my cousin for her daughter, who had mild eczma around her neck. I hadn't seen the child in a while and the other day we caught up and her eczma was sever. Thanks for this imformation, I've imformed the mum and feel extremely dissapointed in Natural Instinct. I'll be getting a refund and changing brands.
I began using NI when I was breastfeeding my disabled daughter. I figured she had enough rubbish in her body with the medications she was taking and I thought I'd be best limiting what I could.
I did a lot of research to find the best quality products at the best price and found NI this way
I am disgusted.
HI,
I have my own website dedicated to Natural organic AUSTRALIAN MADE & OWNED products & i'm VERY PROUD to be a part of a company which true to their customers & that after being a distributor for over 3 years now have not had ONE complaint on their purchased product.
I have always thought that this brand was way too cheap & with all the advertising etc could not work out how they could be making any money.
I am so disgusted!
It is a disgrace that it has taken this long to find out the truth.
